"A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." - Lao Tzu
Being vs. Doing
How do you measure your success? Your quality of life? What stands in the way from who you wish to be? We are all pulled in many directions with demands from every place - our family, work, friends, and the never-ending "to-do list" of life. We become humandoings and lose our sense of humanbeings. Life sweeps us like an ocean wave, and we quickly lose sight of what is most important to us.
Most of us start the year with good intentions, new goals, and a renewed sense of hope. This year will be better than last. We will achieve our goals, get healthier, spend more time with family, get promoted at work, and take that dream vacation. We order that planner to help us stay on track and download the apps to help us with our meals; we commit to that intense workout program. It is all so real and exciting until it isn't. We fall off the wagon, and the renewed hope turns into shame, self-deprecation, and a sense of failure. Maybe our goals were too ambitious. If only we had more time, fewer demands, more support. Yep, it's the system that is rigged.
How do we ever get to what we want?
So, do we give up on our goals? Do we forget about what we wanted for ourselves at the start of a new year? The short answer is "No." We give ourselves time to be with our humanity, allow our feelings of disappointment to rise, and release any judgment of ourselves. We recommit to changing our world by embracing the entirety of our being: flawed, tired, optimistic, persistent, perfectly imperfect. We embrace things as they are. Not what we make them to be. Not adding more or less, but just surrendering to life as it is. The more we struggle with the wave, the more power it will have over us.
The idea is not to resist but to flow. What we resist persists. Flow. Flow. Flow. So what if you forgot about the darn app and lost track of your macros, or the shiny agenda has proven to be useless. So what? You still have YOU. We are more than what we do. We are more than what we accomplish. We are our own universe within. We are powerful beyond measure. We get to decide on a new beginning every day, every moment. We can all use more humanbeing vs. humandoing.
Who do you want to be this year? Share your thoughts and allow yourself to be human. We are all in this together. Cheers to a happy new year and to a new start every day.
